Designing signal into the noise.

Blue BasePub hero graphic with the headline “Start reading the latest breakthroughs in AI,” introducing the AI research discovery platform.

BasePub is an AI research discovery platform—built to surface and connect high-value signals for builders, researchers, and teams. At the time of our work, it was being built and led by Lior Alexander, who came to us to bring clarity to the experience. We redesigned the platform from the ground up—refining the brand system and simplifying the interface to make research feel accessible, not overwhelming. Cleaner layouts, clearer navigation, and intuitive filtering now turn a fast-moving stream of papers into something navigable and actionable. As the exploration layer alongside AlphaSignal—Lior’s widely read AI newsletter—BasePub helps 100K+ practitioners dive deeper. What began as a visual and UX overhaul has become a sharper, more scalable foundation—positioning BasePub as the interface for AI progress.

PROBLEM:

AI research is accelerating, but the experience of following it was noisy. BasePub surfaced strong signals—but the interface made it easy to get lost in feeds, filters, and fragmented views. It needed to feel like a clear window into the work, not another layer of complexity.

SOLUTION:

We rebuilt the experience around focus and legibility. A refined brand system and interface that signal “intelligent, not overwhelming”: calmer layouts, clear hierarchy, and interactions that make dense information easy to scan, understand and act on for builders, researchers and teams.

PROCESS:

We explored multiple UI directions while staying close to what existing users already knew. Instead of a complete reset, we evolved the product: tighter spacing, clearer navigation, more deliberate typography and refined interaction details—raising the bar without breaking familiarity.

RESULT:

BasePub now presents AI research as something you can move through with confidence, not fight against. The platform feels sharper, more human and ready to scale—positioned as a trusted layer for making sense of the AI-research ecosystem and a natural complement to high-signal sources like AlphaSignal, Lior’s AI newsletter.

BasePub comments UI showing a clean, threaded discussion with avatars and timestamps, plus an inline “add new comment” field and blue-highlighted input state, illustrating how researchers can collaborate and react to AI papers directly inside the platform.
BasePub advanced search filters UI showing step-by-step states for refining AI research results by subject, topics, datasets, authors, and saved searches.
BasePub web app feed view showing FLM-101B research papers with upvotes and tags in the main column, advanced AI subject filters on the left, and trending topics and datasets for the week on the right.
BasePub research paper detail view showing the CPPF speech recognition model with abstract, charts preview, social engagement stats, left-hand sidebar of suggested topics and datasets, and a right column with an embedded X post and related papers.
BasePub author profile UI showing AI researcher Shi Gu’s overview with expertise tags, citation metrics, co-author list, and a highlighted publication card for “FLM-101B: An Open LLM and How to Train It with $100K Budget.”
